Research studios are workspaces used for research activities. Saint Paul University鈥檚 Jean-L茅on Allie Library has several research studios. These studios are primarily reserved for active Saint Paul University students.

What are studios for?

Research studios are small workspaces that can be used for research activities. They are housed in the Jean-L茅on Allie Library, a quiet environment conducive to concentration.

Research studios are intended for use by one person at a time. Meetings, including videoconferences and telephone meetings, should be taken elsewhere. This is to maintain the quiet research environment for all Library users.

Studios are available by pre-arranged rental agreement. Many other workspaces are available in the library on a daily basis 鈥 please see the library鈥檚 website or speak to a library staff to find out more.

Who can rent a studio?

Active Saint Paul University Students

Active Saint Paul University students have priority for renting research studios. Studios are assigned subject to availability and compliance with the rental conditions.

Professors and External Researchers

When a studio is available and there is no student waiting list, requests from professors or external researchers may be considered.

Different rates apply to professors and external renters. The applicable rates will be communicated at the time of the request.

Shared workspaces are available for part-time professors. These spaces are managed directly by the faculties. Part-time professors should therefore contact their faculty to inquire about availability and access arrangements.

Rental Periods and Duration

Studios are rented for a minimum period of one term, or four months.

The rental periods are:

  • Fall: September to December
  • Winter: January to April
  • Summer: May to August

Studios cannot be rented for a period of less than four months.

Renewal

Current renters have priority for renewal of their studio, subject to eligibility and compliance with the rental conditions.

Renewal is not automatic. Renters must confirm their intention to renew according to the procedures communicated by the Events and Reservations Office.

Studios and Rates

Two studio sizes are available, subject to availability:

Studio Type

Rate per Term

Small$320 + tax
Large$360 + tax

Studios are rented and paid for by the term (four months). For students, the fees are charged to their student account. Different rates apply to professors and external renters. The applicable rates will be communicated at the time of the request.

Furniture and Setup

Each studio includes a standard furniture package including a desk, chair and a book case.

Renters may bring additional items or furniture to adapt their space to their needs. However, they are responsible for removing all personal belongings and any items or furniture they have added at the end of their rental period. The studio must be left free of all personal belongings at the end of the rental period.

Library Access

An access card is required to enter the library and access the studios. Access to the studios is available during library access hours 鈥 from 6:00 am to midnight.

For professors or external renters who do not already have an appropriate access card, additional fees may apply for the creation of an access card. Access arrangements will be confirmed when the studio is assigned.
